Aio 88 Sacred Sites Pilgrimage – Odaishi Pilgrimage

Aio 88 Sacred Sites Pilgrimage – Odaishi Pilgrimage

This sacred pilgrimage route was established in 1783 (Tenmei 3) by Shōkai Hōin, the head priest of Henmyō-in Temple. It stretches over 48 kilometers through the Aio area of Yamaguchi City.
The origins of the sacred sites trace back to when Shōkai Hōin, at the age of 42, was inspired to bring the spirit of the 88 sacred sites of Shikoku to the village of Aio in order to guide all beings to salvation. He set off on a pilgrimage to Shikoku, where he received sacred talismans and soil from each temple. Upon returning, he selected 88 locations in Aio, scattered the sacred soil in each place, built small halls, and enshrined the talismans of the principal deities.
The Aio 88 Sacred Sites pilgrimage begins at Daishi-ji Temple, located within the grounds of Sho-Hachiman Shrine. Completing the entire route takes approximately two days.
March 20th and 21st on the lunar calendar, the anniversary of Kōbō Daishi’s passing, are known as “Odaishi-sama Day.” On these days, many pilgrims can be seen visiting not only from within the prefecture but also from neighboring regions.
