The "Ishin no Yu" bath is a historic cultural asset, said to have been built in 1860 during the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate. It is believed that loyalist samurai from the Chōshū, Satsuma, and Tosa domains—such as Shinsaku Takasugi, Kogorō Katsura (Kido Takayoshi), Takamori Saigō, Toshimichi Ōkubo, Hirobumi Itō, Masujirō Ōmura, Aritomo Yamagata, Kaoru Inoue, Ryōma Sakamoto—and court nobles like Sanjō Sanetomi of the "Seven Nobles in Exile" gathered at Matsudaya, secretly discussing plans to overthrow the shogunate and restore imperial rule. These historic figures are said to have bathed in this very tub.
